FAIR ELECTIONS FOR NEW YORK COALITION BLASTS BIDEN AND SENATE FOR FAILURE TO DELIVER ON VOTING RIGHTS IN 2021

Groups: Biden is not close to using the powers of his office necessary to meet this challenge; Schumer is trying, but falling short.

As the U.S. Senate wraps up its business for 2021 without having passed critical voting rights bills, the Fair Elections for New York coalition issued the following statement:

“It is outrageous that Congress will close out 2021 without having passed the Freedom to Vote Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act in the face of such a public, anti-democratic, and racially motivated assault on voting rights and democracy by Republicans.

“President Biden is not doing nearly enough to help Senator Schumer line up the votes he needs to send the Freedom to Vote Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to his desk. He must bring the full weight of his position to this fight. Anything less will be a historic failure to protect voters and save American democracy.

“While Senator Schumer is fighting hard, it’s also clearly not been enough. Passing the bill will remain forever critical, but legal experts have warned that going past 2021 begins to create a state-by-state risk of not being implemented in time for the 2022 midterm elections, given expected litigation. That’s unacceptable.

“We’re calling on Senator Schumer and President Biden in the strongest possible terms to meet this moment and deliver for the American people using every last tool, every drop of influence and power, to deliver voting rights now.”
