Statement from Karen Scharff, Executive Director of Citizen Action of New York,
On Behalf of Fair Elections for New York Campaign
“We believe the corruption that exists today in New York is evidence enough to pass Fair Elections, with small-donor, citizen-funded elections at its core. Unfortunately, the leadership coalition that rules the State Senate is apparently comfortable with the atrocious pattern of corruption in state government, along with the dismal public approval ratings and the lack of public trust that accompanies this corruption.
“Today’s announcement by Governor Cuomo that he will create a Moreland Commission is a welcome addition to the ongoing effort to persuade elected officials in Albany to pass a law that replaces their reliance on big contributions with an accountability to everyday New Yorkers. Lawmakers should pass and adopt Fair Elections before the next indictment. If it takes a Moreland Commission’s findings to focus a few Senators on this task, then we’re all for it.”
